Harmonies, Housemates & Haircuts

Sometimes you come up with a melody that you really, really like, and you think, "Hmmm maybe I should make this longer..." ... but the point of the song is already pretty much there in 1 minute.

This song, from my current/upcoming "Alice in Wonderland" children's musical project, is one of those times. What do you guys think... should it be expanded? Reprised later in the show is always a possibility too! (Or maybe Curtain Call music!)

Anyway, have a listen... probably my favourite work-in-progress melody at the moment!

So what else has been new? Just chillin' with my new housemates, went to the movies with one of 'em and his friends a couple of weekends ago (on Nov 20), and last weekend bonded with two out of the three housies over drinks and board games. (Which would've been perfectly pleasant if one of the dudes who was present hadn't rubbed me the wrong way... more on that in this FB post if you're connected to me. The after-effect of which has lingered with me somewhat, and it's been a semi-melancholy kinda week, which I don't appreciate, grr. But. Moving on.)

Oh yeah!! I completed the first draft of my latest ten-minute musical Commencement (working title; soon to be renamed) and have started rehearsing with the cast for the project I've got coming up in late January next year! So that's been pretty cool! I've also been freaking out over my impending Confirmation of Candidature, which is this formality I've got to go through in about 12 days to make sure I'm officially a PhD student, and it involves all the tedious elements like written assignments and presentations, literature reviews and methodologies and whatnot, involving my co-supervisors and other important people. So... yeah. I should...like, start working on that, HAHA! I joke. OR DO I.

But let's go back to Commencement: here's a very brief sneak preview:

Oh yeah, last Tuesday (a week ago) I went for a haircut at the barbershop just next door, and it's run by a lovely lady named Tanya, who gave me this little bit of advice upon hearing my six-month life saga: "First the gym" (see previous post) "and now a new haircut? Wanting to make a physical change is a sign that you're feeling happier, more stable and more content." Yay! Hairstylists are like bartenders in that they both are like therapists, I tell you! In the spirit of egocentricity, here's some pics of me with the new 'do.... me likey! You likey?

You might not be able to really tell, but my new style has
a slight undercut, which I've not had done before. Cool.
Because we all should stop to appreciate ourselves more in the
aisle of a grocery store every now and then.
This pic makes me look pretty buff. But it's a lie. A lie, I tell you!

Smokin', 'Strange', Shakespeare & Song!

Hey all! So this Saturday I'll be coming up to two weeks living here at North Lake Road, and for the most part it's been pretty cool. The guys are nice dudes, though tonight I got a little cranky because one of 'em was having what seemed to be a smoking party on the patio which caused the kitchen to smell rather weedy, which unfortunately I wasn't in the mood to deal with. But it's really not a big deal. They're good guys and so far we've been getting along fine.

The dude I've been connecting with the most is Mlad, a guy of European origin, who's closer to my age and who's also home a lot of the time. He and his girlfriend have been fun to chat and hang out with, and we even had an XBox Dance Party dance-off a couple of nights ago, which was fun, heh! The other guys I've had less interaction with, though somewhat ironically of the remaining two I think I've chatted more with weed-smoking guy. Then there was this moment with the other guy, LOL. Oh well, all in good time, I'm sure!

So the location of this new house is very convenient, with shops literally a two-minute walk away, and yesterday while going on a stroll I discovered there's a 24-hour gym just down the road. So on a whim I decided to give it a trial workout, and as of today I'm happy to say I've signed up for it! It's called Snap Fitness on the corner of North Lake and Leach, and I really like I it because it's affordable; 24-hour access; walking distance; and there's no minimum contract (just a 30-day advance notice required to cancel my membership). On top of which, they're providing two weeks of free membership as well as a free year's subscription to Men's Health magazine. So all in all, it's worth it, I think!! As long as I don't find myself in this situation anytime in the future:

What else has been happening? Oh yes, I'm in the midst of writing/completing my newest 10-minute musical for a project scheduled for January next year, which begins rehearsing next week! The new shorty is (most likely to be) called Commencement. More on this as we get into it!!

I've also been workshopping a new project with my supervisor Jenny de Reuck, a group collaboration with other artistes that's slated to be rehearsed and performed April/May next year, called Biography of Toys. We had a meet-and-greet/initial discussion session on Tuesday followed by some workshopping of ideas today; and on Tuesday I also had lunch with my dear friend Sarah and our mutual mate Jason, before Sarah and I spontaneously decided to catch Dr Strange at the movies, which was really fun in a mind-twisty sort of way. So yay! Here's Sarah and me at the movies, because obviously it was such a momentous occasion that I had to mark it with a wefie:

I'm also fresh off a three-day, four-show run of this year's Shakespeare project in uni, directed by Jenny, which concluded last Saturday; we did a lesser-known play, Pericles, and as usual I performed the live music for it and also composed some of the songs. In fact, check out this video of three of the cast members performing one of the sections from the show:

And here's a nice photo of the cast and crew:

Well, that's about it for now, I think! Check back in again soon. Till then!

North Lake Road, Here I Am!

Hey everyone! So right now I'm sitting in my new bedroom in the new house where I'll be living, on North Lake Road in Myaree, as I previously posted. I was meant to move in a week ago but there were some delays because the landlord wanted the room repainted, which was annoying because I had to wait for it to be dealt with, but which is also good because the room is brand-spanking-new-ish!

So as of right now, today, Saturday the 5th of November, I have officially vacated Carol and Scotts' (much to their relief, I'm sure, hehe!) and have moved in. I moved the last of my things over this afternoon on a hot summer-esque day — the only summer-esque day so far, where temperatures reached about 35 degrees — and then walked back to Carott's place because... dun-dun-dun (dramatic music), their house is within 20-or-so-minutes' walking distance! We had a lovely delicious pizza meal that Carol whipped up, and then I walked back here, and here I am!

Pizza la Carole!
Nicky's farewell dinner. Sad face.
So this should be interesting. The other guys in the house seem to be good blokes so far, if a touch on the untidy and weed-smoking side, LOL. But yeah, all part of the adventure I guess? Hopefully with my new digs I'll be able to focus more on work and actually feel like a productive, creative person again (who's doing a PhD, lest we all forget!). Here's a photo of my new room, which is really quite nice and cozy now. All my gear has been unpacked and set up, ready to go... if only I'd remembered that I need to bring the computer and keyboard to uni tomorrow for the start of Shakespeare intensive rehearsals! Doh! Oh well, at least I got a couple of nice pics out of it!

Scott, Carol and I bought those cushions earlier today. The left clearly says 'Good Vibes'.
The right one says: 'If you dream big enough anything can come true.'
Carol and I also bought a fragrance diffuser from this store called Dusk at Garden City today.
If you squint hard enough, you can see it right next to the tiny table fan.
The boys' gaming area right outside my bedroom. This image doesn't warrant as big a viewing size.
The bathroom in my new place, to be shared by three blokes! Eek!
More updates to come, hopefully! Stay tuned!
