Dreaming Outside The Box: The Show

And here we go! The winning show, last night's live performance! Enjoy!!

Dreaming, and Dreaming Big!

So the final performance of Dreaming Outside The Box has come and gone, and it's been awesome!! I'm so proud to report that we swooped up eight out of fourteen (!) prizes tonight, which resulted in my repeatedly going up in front of everyone to shake the festival director's hand, retrieve my winning, and smile cheesily and abashedly for the camera, LOL. But yeah, eight prizes, baby! Nick's Mission "Return to the Malaysian Arts Scene With A Vengeance!" has certainly ramped up... although, of course, it shalt only reach its maximum impact when we get to The Edge in just a little over a month's time (shriek!).

The categories we won in are for:

  • Best Male Actor - Aaron Teoh
  • Best Female Actor - Tria Aziz
  • Best Director - Freddy Tan
  • Best Musical Director - Me
  • Best Libretto (i.e. Script & Lyrics)
  • Best Composition (i.e. Music)
  • Best Overall Production
  • Audience's Choice Award

Terrific, no?!?!

Here's a pic of us with our prizes, which have been (and will continue to be) distributed among those involved (which includes our awesome musicians, Joanne and Elaine, and our make-up and design team-members!):

I've got a number of other pics that we snapped tonight, but after a long day of rehearsal for The Edge from 10am-6pm earlier yesterday, not to mention a 9am wake-up time for more rehearsing in the morning, I'm pretty knackered. So I shall leave the uploading of other pics for a later time. Check back soon, ok!! Till then!

Dreaming Outside The Box: They are (seemingly) loving it!

So, while I've yet to watch a performance of Dreaming Outside The Box till tomorrow night, I've been getting some terrific feedback. I'll keep the sources of these quotes anonymous, but here are some of the remarks friends on Facebook have said to me (pardon the Malaysianisms!):

--------------------------

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Musical at Short and Sweet...so proud of your achievement!!

Hey dear. Watched s+s tonight. They all had no chance la wei.. Hehe! Congrats! I is the enjoys very much!

Once again - amazing amazing stuff for S+S la. Splendid storytelling and splendid music with a heart. Love it to bits. Anxiously waiting for The Edge to open! Can't wait to see magic on stage. Cheers!

Loved it you freaking genius. I need to rewatch it for days. I need to melt my cold hard iPhoned-heart.

--------------------------

And, the best one of all:

--------------------------

I saw your piece last night, Nick. I wish to commend you on the fine work of art I witnessed. Simple and poignant, the visual spectacle of static characters unable to move but desiring to do so for personal fulfilment was instantly conveyed in under 3 seconds, by far the quickest and clearest conveyance of spirit in any stagework I have seen.

What more that their doubts and trials channelled through conversational songs, with forces pulling at them and forces pushing them in, all within a captivating pace that never got me to check the time mentally nor even break attention from the immediacy of the moment. The jacks' timing were smooth silk, their repartee crystal clear, and their hearts on their sleeves a throbbing aura.

The final touch of pulling the audience's digital reality to a bygone time, and maybe even a present one, was becoming of the culmination of a tight evocative melody within a melody, the music of life strung through a musical, with the profound impotency of lesser wills trapped within their own boxes shall they choose so to continue. Magnifique.

XXXXX and XXXXX told me this is par for the course for you, ever since you gobsmacked them with The Edge many years ago. While I am a mere newcomer to appreciating stage art, more so the musicals, I am heartily delighted to have at least caught this contribution of yours since your last S+S Musical work. A finely crafted piece of great longevity in my mind, yet only probably a wave of your hand, according to XXXX. Either case, thank you for it.

May your future melodies string the human heart asunder.

My reaction was probably something along the lines of this pic:

Edges, Boxes, Clowns and Cats!

Here are some pics from some of the goings-on tonight, folks! First off, our awesum director Sabrina and the super-talented Peter Ong kickstarted the rehearsal proper of The Edge. It took place at a studio in Phileo Damansara, where we encountered a surprise visitor!

All the angst!! Oy!!
There's our surprise guest! (Um. The one with the paws.)
Here, kitty kitty kitty!

At the same time, tech rehearsal was held at KLPac for Dreaming Outside The Box (which I couldn't attend); here are a couple of spoilery shots of the cast! Thanks to Joanne for the pics!! Dreaming kicks off its four-day run from Wednesday to Saturday. Got your tickets yet?

Finally, Peter managed to make this a meme. (Would this then be a memeow?)

The Edge 2013: Every Now And Then....

Here's a clip that's proving quite popular on Facebook. In his first rehearsal, Sean Chong, who has come in to replace a cast member who had to withdraw from the production, attempts one of the tricky songs from the show. Very mild blooperage. Enjoy!

Here's another rehearsal video of that quirky song with the dinosaur... Dreaming Outside The Box will be performed next week, yo!

The Edge 2013: Half-Flown...

A snippet of a vid clip featuring the awesome Peter Ong, who plays Jarod, during rehearsal for The Edge on Tuesday, singing one of the tricker songs from the show. Thanks to Dominic for the clip!

Dreaming Outside The Box: Of Clowns and Creepy Smiles

Trying out potential costumes!

An untouched photo taken during rehearsal.
So Aaron decided to get a haircut today, and later on got into this pose.
It's the freakiest thing I've ever seen.

Edging Further!

Hey everyone. Whew, it's been a busy busy few days, with rehearsals going on and what have you! Saturday and Sunday night there were full-on Edge singing rehearsals, and today we did a 'checkpoint', where the performers sang the entire show (as much as they could!) from beginning to end. It went pretty well, I think, but we still have lots of work to do before the show opens in November! Time's a flying by!

Today has also been a rather long day because, in addition to meeting the musicians for The Edge at Centrepoint tonight, I'd earlier travelled to Universiti Malaya to pay a visit to Jenny from Perth, who's here doing a stint as visiting professor during her sabbatical from Murdoch Uni. It was great catching up, and we talked about, among other things, a certain prospective topic that contains three letters. I don't wanna give too much away, but let's just say the three letters are p, d, and h, not in that sequence. Figure it out yourself. More on this, as and when it develops!

I'm gonna go now, since tomorow's another full day of musicmaking and rehearsing. In the meantime, enjoy this little sneak-peek of Edge rehearsal from over the weekend. I'd asked the cast to improvise harmonies to one of the big show-stopping songs, and you can hear them attempting to make something up.... and then, awesomely, they all found a beautiful chord. Check it out:

Glasses and Boxes!

Hey all! Today I also got myself new glasses. See? Fluorescent green. Funky!! (I should get a hairbrush while I'm at it.)

Meanwhile, rehearsals have been underway for both The Edge and my Short+Sweet Musical piece, Dreaming Outside The Box. More updates on The Edge real soon, but in the meantime, here are some photos from my rehearsal with the Dreaming team this afternoon, plus a sneak peek of one of the songs. This is the first time I've incorporated existing music into my compositions... EDITED: but let's not give that away too soon - come to the show and find out which melody I've plagiarized drawn inspiration from! Enjoy!

Getting into character.
Whew! Good thing we can see Aaron's reflection, otherwise this pic
might have been just a *tad* awkward!!
Yes, there are literal boxes in this mini-musical.
This show is so sad. So, so sad.
COME WATCH, YEA!!!
Here's that video sneak-peek:
